We went to see Drumming by Steve Reich at the Sydney Opera House this evening.

It's a stunning piece of music performed by nine musicians on bongo drums, marimbas and glockenspiels, accompanied by voice and piccalo. The piece lasted 80 minutes. Take a listen (Amazon)

Drumming is split into four sections. The first starts off with just the bongos, the next is the marimbas, then the glockenspiels and finally all of the instruments play together. One of the most fascinating things is just to watch how the musicians play. At one stage there are eight of them sharing a line of a dozen bongos. Each of the players would play anything up to four drums, so you can imagine that there were sticks and arms flying all over the place!

To tomorrow
