New Zealand Diary 20 June 2002

Oh well, you can't have everything. There is a severe weather warning in force today, with a 'weather bomb' due to hit at around 3 this afternoon. I'd better try and get my sightseeing in early!

I traveled west to see a Kauri shop in Awanul followed by a Maori ran backpackers in Kaitaia. The Kauri wood is dug up after having been buried for around 40 000 years and cut and shaped into all sorts of pretty items.

God it can rain! Floods, fallen trees, washed away roads, I drove through, around and over them all today.

I got lost again getting back to Margaret's place, only this time I had to drive through floods avoiding branches and other debris that had been blown into the road. I decided to give up and head back to the main road. I somehow came across their letterbox (I've still no idea how) and forced my little gutless (no power, not strong) little hire car up the stone track to the house.

I got back just in time. A couple of hours later the wind was howling and the rain was lashing against the windows. It did mean that I got to have my second candlelit dinner in a week, only this one wasn't out of choice but rather 'cos the power had gone out.

To tomorrow
